What Makes a Good Pediatrician? A Parent of Two Shares
After navigating pediatric care with both a baby and a toddler, I’ve learned that finding the right pediatrician is about much more than credentials. Experience matters, of course, but so does the way the doctor speaks to my children, answers my questions and makes our whole family feel during an appointment.
Between well visits, vaccinations and the occasional concern that sends me down a late-night internet rabbit hole, our pediatrician has become an important part of our family’s support system. These are the things I now look for in a pediatrician and the qualities that make me feel like we’ve found the right fit.
Bedside manner with kids
How a pediatrician interacts with my children is one of the most important things to me. A doctor could be incredibly knowledgeable and experienced on paper, but if they don’t know how to connect with kids or help them feel safe, it probably won’t be a good fit for our family.
I pay attention to whether the pediatrician gets down to my toddler’s level, talks to him directly and explains what they’re doing before touching him. Something as simple as letting him see the stethoscope before listening to his heart can make the experience much less intimidating. With my baby, I notice whether the doctor handles him gently and gives him a moment to settle before beginning the exam.
I also want to feel comfortable as a parent. I’m usually the one setting the tone for my children, so when I feel calm and confident with their pediatrician, they can sense that too. The best pediatricians understand that making parents feel at ease is part of helping kids feel safe.
A welcoming pediatric waiting room
The environment matters more than I realized before becoming a parent. Doctor’s offices can feel unfamiliar and intimidating to young children, so I appreciate a space that feels welcoming rather than overly clinical.
For my toddler, that means having age-appropriate toys and books to keep him entertained while we wait. I also love when children are encouraged to explore. A thoughtfully designed pediatric clinic gives kids room to touch things, play and be themselves without parents worrying that they’ll damage something. That freedom makes a difference, especially when you’re trying to keep a curious toddler occupied while also caring for a baby.
That said, I don’t want the space to feel chaotic or overstimulating. A calm, sensory-friendly environment can help both kids and parents walk into the appointment feeling more relaxed. This applies to both the waiting room and the exam room.
Ideally, the pediatrician’s office becomes a place they recognize and enjoy visiting rather than somewhere they fear or dread.
A pediatrician who knows your child
There’s something reassuring about a pediatrician who remembers my children and the details of our family. It makes us feel like more than names on an appointment schedule.
When my second son was born, we chose the same pediatrician who cares for our toddler. During our visits, she remembers small details from when our toddler was a baby and asks how he is adjusting to becoming a big brother. It may sound like small details, but it makes me feel like she genuinely knows our family and cares about how everyone is doing.
Seeing the same doctor also gives my children the chance to build trust over time. When my toddler was younger, he cried during every visit. Now, he gets excited to come along for his own appointments or his baby brother’s visits.
Thoughtful answers to your questions
As a mom of two young children, I always arrive with a long list of questions for our pediatrician, whether we’re there for a sick visit or a well visit. That’s why it’s so important to me that our pediatrician takes her time and never makes us feel rushed. I want someone who listens to our questions and concerns, no matter how big or small, provides thoughtful answers and explanations, and offers guidance about what we can expect during the next stage.
I also appreciate a pediatrician who can reassure me without dismissing my concerns or making me feel alarmed. When a doctor can strike that balance, I leave the appointment feeling informed, supported and more confident about what comes next.
A pediatric patient portal and care team
Anything that makes life easier as a parent is a win in my book. Getting two small children dressed, packed and out the door for an appointment is already an event, so I appreciate a pediatric practice that makes the rest of the process as simple as possible.
An easy-to-use patient portal allows me to review important information, check visit summaries and keep track of my children’s care without searching through paperwork. Email and text reminders are also incredibly helpful when I’m managing appointments for two kids along with everything else on our family calendar.
A quick check-in process matters too. I don’t want to stand at the front desk filling out multiple forms while trying to hold a baby and keep my toddler nearby. The little conveniences may not seem significant on their own, but together they can make the entire appointment feel much less stressful.
The office team is another important part of the experience. We interact with receptionists, nurses and medical assistants before we even see the pediatrician, so I want those interactions to feel friendly and helpful. A responsive team that answers questions, communicates clearly and helps resolve issues can make a huge difference, especially when I’m calling because one of my children is sick or I’m unsure whether we need an appointment.
Finding the right pediatrician has given me more peace of mind as a mom. I want someone who knows my children, listens to my concerns and creates an experience that feels comfortable for our whole family. When the doctor, team, and environment all work together, pediatric care feels less stressful and my kids can begin building a positive relationship with their health from the very beginning.
